Tips for Writing Obituaries

What to Include in The Perfect Obituary

An obituary is written to give a account of someone's life. It can be published in local newspapers, alumni newsletters, military news, society newletters, etc. When my father passed, it was difficult to decide what details to include. Fortunately, my sister, a professional writer, handled this aspect of his funeral plans. Here is a helpful list of things you may want to include.

  • Full Name
  • Date and Place of Birth
  • Date and Place of Death
  • Surviving Family Members' Names including spouse or partner, children, parents, siblings and grandparents
  • Interests, Passions, Hobbies, Publications, Honors, Military Service, Awards and Distinctions
  • Brief Summary of Career

Costs

Obituaries are often considered paid notices. Newspapers will have a price per line or per word.  Headings cost more. There is typically a set up fee and photo fee.  Prepayment is often necessary.

Sample pricing:  News Tribune charges per line.  There are about 5 words per line.  The heading is considered 2 lines. Each line costs $8.16. Plus the photo for$132.  Set up fee of $17.50.  Decide on your budget and make the most of it.
